The device for installing and holding an edge formwork panel of a horizontal slab (8), without danger to the manpower, including: - a vertical stay (2) provided with a thrust cylinder (3, 4) at each of its ends, - an oblique stay (18) anchored at one end into the base surface and connected to the upper part of the vertical stay, - a vertical upright (16) fixed to the vertical stay and carrying the edge formwork panel (25) via at least one holding member (23) forming a horizontal thrust cylinder. By actuating the or both horizontal thrust cylinders, the edge formwork (shuttering) is clamped against the horizontal formwork, its height is adjusted, and the device is immobilized between the framework (5) of the formwork and the base surface (1). Preferably, the vertical uprights (16) furthermore carry a guard rail (27) which is thus in place before the manpower has to walk around on the slab (8) bounded by the panels (25). <IMAGE>
