The subject of the present invention is a process for the hydroxylation of phenol compounds which makes it possible to increase the amount of para isomer. The invention relates to a process for the hydroxylation of phenol compounds using hydrogen peroxide and in the presence of an effective amount of a strong acid and of a ketone compound, the said process being characterised in that the reaction is carried out in the presence of a polar aprotic organic solvent having a polarity such that its dielectric constant is less than approximately 20 and a basicity such that it has a "donor number" greater than or equal to 15 and less than 25.
