The mixture to be monitored is placed in a thermostated cell (1), pressurised and stirred by a rotary agitator which is actuated by drive means (7-9) with adjustable drive torque. A control system (24, 25) driven by a microcomputer (26) programs a temperature gradient and compensates for possible pressure drops in the cell by injecting gas taken from a regulated pressurised gas source (16), and records the variations over time of the drive torque applied, which is characteristic of the consistency of the mixture until it reaches a certain detachment threshold, when the drive means cease to act on the agitator. The device may be used, for example, for testing additives capable of inhibiting or delaying the solidification of a mixture of water and of petroleum and gas effluents, resulting from the formation of hydrates.
