Fibre optical component mfr. - using holder with successively individually detachable attachments

An optical fibre is joined to a holder and, after processing, attachments are applied to the holder to allow further fibre processing. The attachments are designed to allow successive individual detachment without affecting the other attachments. In an appts. for carrying out the process, the optical fibre (7) is held linearly on a flat holder (1) at the processing location and a grinding or polishing tool (16) has the requisite curvature at its working face (12). USE/ADVANTAGE - For mfg. polarisers, couplers, switches, spectral filters, etc. Minature components can be mfd. without expensive prepn. of glass holder blocks with machined curved grooves for fixing the fibre.
