The laser scanner (10) generates an output focussed (11,12,13) onto the surface of a rotating polygonal mirror (17). The light reflected from the surface (20) is directed onto the surface of an oscillating mirror (22) that pivots about an axis at 90 degrees to that of the polygon mirror. The laser beam scans the surface of the object under evaluation and components (26,27) are reflected back by the polygon mirror to be focussed (33) and passed to a processing unit (36). ADVANTAGE - High resolution scanning of 3D objects. Simple adjustment of scanning frequency.
