PURPOSE:To carry out the gradation processing in response to only a white area of the background by detecting the contour of an image area of an original and carrying out the gradation processing after selection of an inner or outer area of the contour. CONSTITUTION:An image contour detector circuit 8 detects the contour of an image area of an original based on the image data Dr read out of the original which includes an image area and a white area. An area deciding circuit 9 decides the inner and outer areas with the detected contour defined as a boundary. If it is decided that an image exists in the inner area of the contour, a multiplexer MUX 7 ignores the white area that is included in the image area of the original and applies the gradation processing to only the white area included in the background of the original image area. As a result, an area where the gradation processing is carried out is limited and a printed package image can be emphasized on the transfer paper. |
