Disclosed is a method for image formation which comprises developing a silver halide photographic photosensitive material in the presence of a compound represented by the following formula [I] or [II]: <IMAGE> [I] wherein Ar represents an aryl group, R1, R2 and R3 which may be identical or different each represents a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group, an aralkyl group, an aryl group, or a heterocyclic group, with a proviso that they cannot be simultaneously hydrogen atoms, R1 and R2 may link to each other to form a ring, and at least one of R1, R2 and R3 has at least one hydroxyl group as a substituent, <IMAGE> [II] wherein Ar1 and Ar2 each represents a divalent aromatic group, R1, R2, R3 and R4 each represents a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group, an aryl group or a heterocyclic group, Rand R2 may link to each other to form a ring and R3 and R4 may link to each other to form a ring, L represents a divalent linkage group, and n represents 0 or 1.
