PURPOSE:To provide a discharge lamp lighting control device by which light distribution when a lamp is lit up again after the lamp is put out once can be set equal to light distribution when the lamp is lighting up steadily. CONSTITUTION:When an electric power control means 15 to control electric power supplied to a high pressure discharge lamp 1 lights up the lamp again within 25 seconds after the lamp is put out once, a timer means 12 counts the time elapsed from when the high pressure discharge lamp 1 is started. In a period when the time elapsed is between points of times of 200ms and 500ms, an average lamp consumption power is controlled so as to become equal to or larger than 1.2 times as well as equal to or smaller than 2.5 times the rated lamp consumption power, and a film of mercury and halide formed in a lamp tube is removed at thigh temperature, so that scatter of light can be prevented.
