The mechanism for axially clamping a tool (15), partic. a (grinding) disc, to a flange (16) on the drive spindle (10) comprises a clamp nut (17;18,19) with internal thread (20) on a threaded (14) spindle end portion (13) and a member (21) interposed between disc (15) and nut actuated from the nut end to apply (final) clamp force. This (forked) member is movably (swivellably about 31, 32) held by the nut and provided with contoured cam faces (28,29) such that it is movable between a clamp and a release position.
