A method for firing an electric furnace in which gas is fed from a gas source, via a burner pipe, to the furnace chamber is known. According to the invention, it is proposed for the gas to be supplied intermittently and for air to be sent through the burner pipe in intervening periods. Preferably, a pulse of air is sent through the burner pipe immediately after each pulse of gas.
