PURPOSE:To provide clear contract so as to perform reliable detection of a defect on the surface of a metallic sheet by providing a guide roll in the middle between a part of reels to deliver or wind a polishing belt and a press device to move the guide roll toward the metallic sheet and press the polishing belt against the metallic sheet. CONSTITUTION:Two or more guide rolls 3 having a rotary shaft extending at right angles to the running direction of a metallic sheet are located in the middle between a pair of reels 2-1 and 2-2 which to deliver or wind a polishing belt 5. A press device 4 which moves the guide rolls 3 toward a metallic sheet 1 and presses the polishing belt 5 against the metallic sheet 1 is provided. This constitution brings the polishing belt into surface contact with the surface of the metallic sheet and applies uniform polishing thereto under a light pressure. When a polishing device for a metallic sheet is used in an inspection line for the surface defect of the metallic sheet, clear contract is given to a part having a rugged surface defect and the defect on the surface of the metallic sheet can be reliably detected.
