PRODUCTION OF WAVELENGTH CONVERSION ELEMENT

PURPOSE:To obtain the process for production of the wavelength conversion element by forming a layer which periodically inverts a nonlinear polarization on a nonlinear optical crystal. CONSTITUTION:After the surface of an LiTaO3 substrate 1 is partially subjected to a proton exchange treatment, the substrate is heat treated. The heating up rate of the substrate heat treatment is increased by using a heating treatment device which elevates temp. at a high rate at this time, by which the heating treatment at a high temp. is executed in a short period of time. Consequently, the heat diffusion of the proton exchange layer 3 is suppressed and the spreading of the polarity inversion layer formed within the proton exchange layer 4 is suppressed. The polarity inversion layer of the short period suppressing the lateral spreading of the polarity inversion layer is formed in this way. The wavelength conversion element which can make short wavelength conversion with high efficiency is thus obtd.
