An engine supplied with a variable proportion of alcohol to petrol has its suitability for starting decided dependant on the alcohol proportion and the engine or fuel temperature. If the temperature is below the starting temperature electric heaters 23d in the engine intake ports are energised, fuel injection onto the heaters is prevented, the fuel pump (27 Fig. 5) is operated to circulate fuel past an alcohol proportion sensor (29) and the starter motor is prevented from operating. After a period of heater operation the starter motor is operated for 2 or 3 seconds before fuel injection onto the heaters begins. The ignition timing is retarded dependent upon the alcohol proportion. The intake air quantity, engine speed and knock also influence various of the controlled values including injection timing and quantity.
