A pyro- or thermal-sensor system is used to detect the of an object in such a way that its speed can be determined, to monitor vehicle speed. a domed housing (7) has a reflective internal surface. A circuit board has at least one pair of pyrosensors (51,52) that relate to specific angles of reception (theta1,theta2, theta3). The unit is mounted some distance above a traffic lane. One sensor responds to the vehicle as it approaches the field of vision and the other as it leaves. Pulses are generated and separated by a period proportional to speed.
