To activate layered minerals esp. bentonite, the material is predried so it is less damp. After the activating material has been added, a set time is established as the charge time for the discontinuous operation of a mixing and kneading pan grinder. After the charge time, as the mixing and kneading pan grinder continues to operate, the activated material is discharged. The water content of the material to be activated is pref. 16-25% of the dry mass. A preparation time is established according to the characteristics of the raw material and the activating material, together with the kinematic values of the mixer and the kneading pan grinder. The material passage is within a discrete time span, and is used as a time window within the total running time of the pan grinder, as a charge time between the feed of the material into and withdrawal from the pan grinder.
