The device for altering a tape drive mode, has a shift member (57) arranged to be moved as the tape drive mode is altered. Movement of the shift member selectively engages a torque transmission apparatus (47) with one of a pair of tape reels and to maintains the application of tension to a tape to prevent loosening of the tape during alteration of the tape drive mode from a playback/recorded mode to a rewind mode. - The torque transmission apparatus may comprise gears (50,51) which intermesh alterantely with gear (47) and are coaxial with the reel setting discs (10 and 11).
