ELECTROSTATIC SHIELDED PROBE

The electrostatic shielded probe comprises an elongated inductive winding having opposite ends to receive an alternating electric signal, and an active electrostatic shield having a conductive plate positioned alongside a portion of the winding. The conductive plate is electrically connected to a point on the winding that exhibits a potential substantially opposite to an average potential across the portion of the winding when the winding is subjected to the alternating electric signal. The conductive plate has a thickness adjusted to produce, in response to the potential applied thereto, an electric field substantially opposite to an electric field produced by the portion of the winding when the winding is subjected to the alternating electric signal, thereby resulting in a compensation and a substantial cancelling net effect of both electric fields. Additional like conductive plates can be positioned alongside other portions of the winding.
