The tamping machine has bogies with a machine frame, which carries a height- and sideward-adjustable rail lifting and straightening jig and a levelleling and straightening reference system. The frame also has a height-adjustable tamper with pivoted tamping tools, and a pivoted side tamping tool. The tamping tools (12), which enter into the spaces between the sleepers, and the side tamping tools (13) for compressing the ballast in the sleeper end areas, are each located on their own tool carrier (42, 15). The tool carriers are individually adjustable by drives, and form individual main-side tamping heads (8, 10). ADVANTAGE - Permits tamping performance to be adjusted to individual conditions.
