In a distributing roller for printing machines for distributing liquid or printing ink by means of a rotating and axial movement, the drive is effected by friction over the outer surface of the roller body. To initiate the traversing movement, the gearing situated in a housing for generating the frequency of the traversing operation is fixed relative to the roller frame. The distributing roller can thus be used as a traversing or as a non-traversing ink transporting roller.
