PURPOSE:To obtain a new compound having excellent solubility in liquid crystal and stability, showing purple or green as a liquid crystal element exhibiting high dichroism by blending the compound with liquid crystal. CONSTITUTION:A compound shown by formula I or formula II (R<1> and R<2> are lower alkyl; R<1> and R<2> may be mutually bonded to form ring) such as 3-dibutylamino-10-hydroxybenzo[b]naphto[2,3-d]furan-6,11-dione and 2-[2'- hydroxy-4'-(dibutylamino)phenyl]-5-hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone. The compound shown by formula I is obtained by reacting a compound shown by formula III with a compound shown by formula IV to give the compound shown by formula II and then heating the compound shown by formula II in a basic solvent to subject the compound to molecular ring closure. |
