<p>A new azetidinonic compound, (3S,4R)-3-amino-4-[(S)-alpha- hydroxybenzyl] azetidine-2-one, which may be N-protected, a process for its preparation from natural mandelic aldehyde by protection of the hydroxyl group, conversion of the aldehyde into a Schiff base with aniline or benzylamine, reaction of the product so obtained with an alkyl-2,2,5,5-tetramethyl-1,2,5-azadisilylidine-1- acetate, treatment of the azetidinone derivative so formed with a functional derivative of an acid for the introduction of an N-protective group, optional O- deprotection and/or N-deprotection and unblocking of the amide nitrogen is described.</p> |
