<p>The scrap batteries comminuted to pieces of 300 mm size are separated directly in a heavy suspension of water and oxide/sulphate fraction (paste) from the batteries, at a suspension density from 1.65 to 2.20 kg/dm<3>, whereby a heavy material, which consists of a coarse-grained metal fraction and oxide/sulphate fraction, and a light material of an organic fraction of ebonite, polyvinyl chloride and polypropylene, contaminated by the oxide/sulphate fraction, are obtained. After washing, all the fractions are subjected to a second and third separation, pure fractions of the said substances being produced at the end. In addition to washing, screening and classifying of the end products is carried out. Circulating water is used, so that the process does not pollute the environment and can be carried out at high efficiency and relatively low cost. Separating/washing devices are arranged in series, each having an outer drum (1) and a perforated inner drum (2) concentric thereto. A helical strip (4) is fixed to the inner wall of the outer drum (1). In the front section, the outer drum (1) is closed by a cover (25) with an inlet opening (26).
