Process for preparing an aqueous emulsion of a copolymer exhibiting functional groups at the surface, consisting in performing a copolymerisation between at least one monomer of vinyl or styrene-based type and a monomer bearing at least one cationic precursor group, in the presence of an initiator, in hydrolysing the cationic precursor groups in a neutral or basic medium to release the functional groups, between the copolymerisation and hydrolysis stages or not later than during the hydrolysis, an addition of at least one surface-active agent being performed to obtain, after hydrolysis, a copolymer in the form of stabilised latex. The invention also covers a dispersion of an intermediate cationic copolymer bearing at the surface precursor groups of functional groups, as well as a dispersion of the final copolymer comprising functional groups at the surface.
