A multilayer tube comprises an outer extruded layer 3 which is formed with longitudinally extending ribs 4. As shown the tube comprises an inner extruded layer of a polyamide such as nylon, particularly nylon 11, an intermediate layer 2 of braided filaments of "Terylene " (Registered Trade Mark) and the outer layer 3 of nylon 11. The tube 1 is passed through a braiding machine 7, Fig. 3, in which the layer 2 is applied, and then through an extruding machine 8 in which the outer ribbed layer 3 is extruded on to the layer 2. The resulting tube is passed through a cooling head 10 in. which jets of cooling fluid, such as water, or air, are sprayed through holes 14, Fig 4, into the grooves between the ribs to cool the bottoms of the grooves more rapidly than the ribs. The grooves may alternatively be cooled by a series of cooled teeth or rotatable discs engaging in the grooves. From the cooler 10 the tube passes through a cooling trough 17 on to a reel 24. The outer layer 3 may contain a stablilising agent to render it resistant to the action of light and heat. Specification 896,388 is referred to. |
