A data base system has an image scanner (1), an image memory (2), a CPU (3), a video RAM (4), a display unit (5), an interface (6) and an optical disc memory (7). The scanner is used to read a catalogue card or a document card. The latter is located above a stack of document cards examined in sequence. The catalogue cards has an identification on one corner and a name region. Information content is described by data contained in three groups. Search marks in each group provide classifications, e.g. marketing, research, etc. ADVANTAGE - Simplifies access to catalogued document information.
