On a sheet e.g. of Si with oxide, nitride, or polyimide coating, a buffer layer of low refractive index carries more highly refractive striplines (2) and electric conductors (6) locally surrounded by cladding (5), to which a cover (8) is sealed hermetically to protect optoelectronic components (7). The conductors (6) extend from under the cladding (5), and the striplines (2) are joined at one end to optical fibres (15) set into V-grooves (11), with a vertical walled groove at the transition. ADVANTAGE - Coupling of striplines is simplified with elimination of insulation hitherto required between conductors and cladding.
