A fire extinguisher has a quenchant container (2) which can be positioned to enclose the site of a fire (4) so that the quenchant (3) can be supplied via a feed device (32) to the fire. Pref. the quenchant container (2) has one or more chambers (5) contg. liq. N2 as quenchant. ADVANTAGE - The improved extinguisher facilitates quenching even of oil fires in which the oil emerges from ground at high pressure.
