The ship (1) has cork buoyancy chambers amidships. When seawater enters the ship, superstructure and top deck project from the water. There may be one big chamber filled with cork, or a number of small chambers, so that ingress of water is limited to an area close to the damaged portion of the hull. The chambers containing the cork may be confined to one deck, closer to the top deck than the bottom of the hull for stability.
