Process for the production of a diene polymer exhibiting markedly improved tensile strength and wear resistance properties as well as improved properties of heating, of rebound resilience, processability and skid resistance on a wet surface. This diene polymer is produced by polymerising a conjugated diene monomer or a mixture of a conjugated diene monomer and of a vinylaromatic monomer, and by reacting the active ends of the active diene polymer obtained with (a) CO2 or CS2 or with (b) an N-substituted aminocarbonyl or aminothiocarbonyl compound, an amide or a thioamide. The invention also relates to a rubber composition containing this diene polymer and which also benefits from improvements in the same properties.
