PURPOSE: To reduce contamination by a simple and economical method by opening an exhaust circuit in a cylinder through a first opening placed substantially at the same height as an intake hole and the exhaust hole of a second opening provided above the first opening. CONSTITUTION: Pre-compression air for combustion is formed in a second chamber during the lowering of a piston 5, and extruded into a transmission cannel 7. The power pulse of gas expanded or burnt is generated on the piston 5, and the piston 5 exhausts pre-gas from a hole 19 according to the position of a closure 12. While approaching a bottom dead center, the piston 5 almost simultaneously opens a suction hole 17 and an exhaust hole 18, pours fresh gas passed through the transmission cannel 7 to a cylinder 3, pushes the burnt and expanded gas before the same, and then relives the gas through the exhaust holes 18 and 19. At the time of starting cold work, the quantity of combustion gas in the early stage of the lowering process of the piston 5 is exhausted without any discharged air, catalysts 15 and 11 are started and, even if exhaust gas is cooled at the piston bottom dead center, a catalyst pot 11 is correctly prevented from being contaminated.
