A process for the preparation of highly concentrated aqueous pastes of alkali metal salts of alpha-sulphonated fatty acid alkyl esters with low viscosity, which, at high contents of solid, are mobile even at moderately elevated temperatures, by sulphonation and subsequent working up of the one sulphonation reagent and subsequent working up of the crude sulphonic acid in aqueous medium with the formation of alkali metal salt, which is characterised in that one or more hydroxyocenol sulphonate(s) and/or hydroxyocenol ether sulphonate(s) is/are added to the reaction mixture.
