PURPOSE: To provide a comparatively inexpensive and simple method by utilizing the concepts of an electric machine and a damping energy, on the bearing damper for giving the damping force to the shaft device of a gas turbine engine. CONSTITUTION: An electromagnetic damping system is utilized to slow down the shaft of a gas turbine. A rotor 18 is mounted on the outer race of a bearing through which the shaft 12 passes. The damper can use a permanent magnet(PM) design with the permanent magnet mounted to the rotor. Alternately, the rotor and stator 20 may be designed to operate upon a switched reluctance motor(SRM) design. Instead of installing the rotor to the outer race, the rotor can be installed directly to the gas turbine shaft. In this case, the rotor and a corresponding stator serve both as a damper and also as a generator providing the effective electric generation function from the gas turbine shaft. |
