In prepn. of singly unsatd. fatty acids or derivs. by catalytic hydrogenation of poly-unsatd. fatty acids or derivs., the partial hardening is in presence of a catalyst obtd. by (a) adding alkali carbonates to aq. solns. of water-sol. Cu(II) and Zn(II) salts, to pH 6-10, (b) sepg. and drying the ppte. of CuCO3 and ZnCO3, (c) calcining the dried catalyst at 400-600 deg.C for 1-60 mins., and (d) opt. bringing the calcined catalyst into the form of pieces. Aq. solns. of Cu(NO3)2 and Zn(NO3)2 are pref. brought to pH 6-10 with a soln. of Na2CO3, and the ppte. is sepd., dried, calcined, and opt. brought into piece form. Partial hardening is at 100-250 deg.C and 1-50 bars, using 0.1-10 wt.% of catalyst, w.r.t. fatty acid or deriv., with linoleic acid or its esters with 1-4C alkanols or glycerol, or natural fats or oils rich in linoleic acid, or linolyl alcohol as raw material. USE/ADVANTAGE - Technical fatty acids or derivs. with above 60% (above 70%) of oleic acid are used in the cosmetic industry, in petroleum prodn., and in the textile industry. The hydrogenation is highly selectived)
