A process of producing p-amino diphenylamine comprises reducing an alkali metal salt of p-nitroso diphenylamine with hydrogen while the metal salt is dissolved in water and while agitated with an hydrogenation catalyst. The nitroso compound is said to exist in the tautomeric oxime form in the presence of alkali and to form a metal salt. The reduction may take place in the presence of an inert water-insoluble organic solvent or at an elevated temperature, e.g. up to 100 DEG C., to keep the amino diphenylamine in solution and prevent it coating the catalyst and reducing its efficiency. When an organic solvent is used the base is recovered from it in the form of an hydrochloride. In the examples the potassium or sodium salt of p-nitroso diphenylamine is reduced in the presence of platinum oxide or palladized charcoal in the presence or absence of benzene or xylene. |
