Aryl ethers of formula (I) are used as antiseborrhoeic agents for prodn. of topical pharmaceutical or cosmetic compsns. with sebosuppressive activity. R1 is (a) a 6-20C satd. cycloaliphatic alkyl gp., or (b) a 6-20C mono- or polyunsatd., linear, branched or cycloaliphatic alkyl gp.; R2 is 1-4C hydroxyalkyl, 3-4C hydroxyalkenyl, COOR3, CH2COOR3, CH2CH2COOR3 or CH:CHCOOR3, R3 is H, a cation, 1-4C alkyl, 2-4C hydroxyalkyl or (1-4C) alkoxy(2-4C) alkyl. Pref. cpds. (I) are those where R1 is (a) 6-20C cyclohexylalkyl or mono-, di- or trimethyl-cyclohexylalkyl or (b) geranyl, neryl, nerolidyl, farnesyl, 6,10-dimethyl-5,9-undecadienyl, beta-citronellyl, phytyl or isophytyl and R2 is CH2OH, CH:CHCH2OH, COOR3, CH2CH2COOR3 or CH:CHCOOR3, where R3 is H, a cation or 1-4C alkyl. Compsns. for application to the hair and skin contain 0.0005-0.5 wt.% (I). .
