[Also in Division D1] Split yarn is produced by feeding a longitudinally oriented film of a synthetic thermoplastic material, e.g. polyester, polyethylene or polypropylene, under tension between a splitter 27 comprising a plurality of axially spaced toothed wheels 30 whose teeth are axially aligned and an axially toothed roller 28, both of which are rotated synchronously and are spaced so that the teeth 38, 43 co-operate without actually touching. The roller/splitter may be inclined at an angle to the film movement and the splitter may include a plurality of filmslitting blades which co-operate with grooved wheels on the roller. Safety devices for stopping operation in the event of film breakage or entanglement are described. The splitter may be adjusted by rotating end screws 41 which tilt the wheels 30 relative to the rotary axis, axial tooth alignment being assisted by mounting the wheels on a keyed central rod. |
