Prepn. of finely divided silica comprises reaction of an alkali silicate soln. with acid or acid-type reagents with mixing by stirring and action of high sheer strengths, circumverting a coherent hydrogel structure. The alkali silicate soln, is successively (a) neutralised and (b) treated with solns. of tensioactive poly-dimethyldiallyl ammonium polymers (I), at the point at which the viscosity of the sol phase is 10-15 mPa/s and prior to reaching an electrolyte concn. of 0.3N. The concn. of the (I) soln. is such that coagulation takes place below the critical micelle-forming concn. of (I). USE/ADVANTAGE - The finely divided silica is an active filler for polymer work-up, a thickener and thixotropic agent for various systems, a carrier for biologically active materials, an extender for dispersion paints and a mobile solvent for bulk materi
