In a longitudinal power unit for a motor vehicle having an axis X-X common to the gear-box output shaft 11 and differential input shaft 14 disposed parallel to and below the crank-shaft axis W-W, the gear-box is disposed at the front or rear of the engine, and the engine cylinders are inclined over the differential at greater than 45 degrees to the vertical. As shown, gears 9, 10 connect a clutch 3 at the end of the crank-shaft to the primary shaft 8 of a mechanical gear-box, and a sleeve 13 connects the shafts 11, 14. In another embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), the clutch output shaft extends into the gear-box housing and carries a gear meshing with a gear integral with and disposed centrally of the gear-box primary shaft. |
