The speed control system has a regulator (12) that receives a speed measurement value (14) and an input (16) generated by the driver that indicats the 'cruise' speed required. An indicator (26) signifies the activation condition of the speed controller. A control input stage (32) responds to inputs generated by the accelerator pedal (38) and the brake pedal. When a required cruise speed is required the driver presses a set button. The regulator is deactivated when the accelerator or brake pedal is moved. ADVANTAGE - Provides safe mode of operation.
