The insertion drive allows the cassette (2) to be displaced perpendicular to the axis of the transport roller for the ink ribbon, with automatic coupling between the transport roller and an external drive shaft (22) when the cassette is in the fully inserted position. The drive shaft is displaced axially against a return spring bias to release it from the coupling position under control of a ramp face (30) extending inwards from the front edge (28) of the cassette. The drive shaft is returned automatically into the coupling position upon full insertion of the cassette, with subsequent release from this position via a manual release lever (32), to allow removal of the cassette.
