A vehicle is equipped with auxiliary caterpillar tracks for propulsion, steering, and getting out of difficult situations in particular. The caterpillar tracks (7) are carried by a chassis made of welded tubular elements (1, 1a, 1b, 1c) and controlled by crawler wheels (chain wheels) carried by shafts passing through the front crossmember (1a) of the chassis (2). The central part of the front crossmember (1a) forms a differential housing controlled by transmission shafts passing through an element (1c) of the chassis and a rotary and extensible central fitting (9). The driving force for driving the caterpillar tracks (7), possibly at different speeds for steering, as well as for raising the entire vehicle by means of the central fitting (9) is taken off at the output of the automatic transmission of the vehicle, the pivoting in the raised position being produced by an electric motor (39). The invention is applicable particularly to private cars and to lorries. <IMAGE>
