The oscillation path in the radial direction of the component is split up into its speed harmonics (7,8) by Fourier analysis. The phase shift (11,13) between the max. of the harmonic(s) and a certain rotary position of the component as well as the amplitudes of the harmonic(s) are determined for at least one speed harmonic. A vector is defined from the amplitude and phase shift. A reference vector is formed for the component in a fault-free condition. Vectors are then formed for the actual condition of the component. A difference vector is formed for comparison with a threshold value. A signal is generated if the latter is exceeded. As well as the FFT components, a control unit, a reference memory, a subtractor, a comparator and a display are used. USE/ADVANTAGE - Rapid comparison for detection of component fault.
