Quaternary ammonium salts of chitosan possessing hypocholesterolemic activity of formula (II) in which A represents the monomer unit of a chitosan, m is a whole number between 100 and 1,000, R1 is C1-C4 linear alkyl and X is a physiologically acceptable water soluble polyanion, where n is at least 10 but not greater than about 10,000, and any remaining positive charges are balanced by nonpolymeric anions.
