PURPOSE:To display a sharp light-and-shade image by forming a plate body which has a hollow part by using a transparent material and sealing phase shift type liquid crystal in the hollow part, confronting the plate surface of a polarizing plate and the surface of a birefringent body with the surface of the plate body, and providing a reflecting mirror which reflects transmitted light to a rectangular member and forming the entirety integrally. CONSTITUTION:The plate body 2 formed of the transparent material is arranged by, for example, a fixed method between two glass substrates opposite across spacers so that the hollow part is formed. The phase shift type liquid crystal is sealed in the hollow part and a seal member is mounted on the peripheral edge part of the hollow part so that the liquid crystal does not leak out. Further, dot electrodes as picture elements are formed longitudinally and laterally on the glass substrates and a lead-out pattern for receiving an external control signal is formed. The plate surface of a circular polarizing plate 3 is confronted with the top surface of the plate body 2, the mirror surface of the reflecting mirror 4 is confronted with the reverse surface of the plate body 2, and the plate body, circular polarizing plate 3, and the reflecting mirror 4 are adhered integrally. Consequently, the sharp light-and-shade image is displayed on a display surface. |
