PURPOSE:To attain the transmission/reception of an electronic mail data mutually between interstation data terminals having different data transmission systems by adding a protocol converter to an electronic mail host terminal data adapter. CONSTITUTION:An electronic mail transmitting terminal 7b calls an electronic mail host terminal 7a and according to an automatic response on the terminal 7a side, a data link is established between the terminals 7b and 7a. In this case, the data transmission system of the terminal 7b is added and transmitted as a common line signal from a B station. An exchange CPU 1 reads the data transmission system of the terminal 7b and announces it to a data adapter 6a. At this time, the data adapter 6a adding a protocol converter 10 converts a mail data, which is transmitted through an exchange switch 2, from an exchange switch transmission signal to a data code according to the data transmission system of the terminal 7b received from the exchange CPU 1 in the case of establishing the data link by a data encoding device 12.
