In a process for coating a catalyst for freeing the air of pollutants such as unburnt on incompletely burnt hydrocarbons, ozone, oxides of nitrogen and carbon monoxide, the catalytic coating material is introduced into the catalyst as an aerosol capable of being suspended in air and is made to adhere there. According to the invention a heterogeneous coating is applied in a catalyst by charging and deposition of the catalytic substance in the aerosol state from the gas phase by means of electric fields perpendicular to the flow direction of the carrier gas. The catalyst can be regenerated by regenerating it by aerosol coating while the engine is running or by means of an auxiliary blower preferably connected to the exhaust gas line. <IMAGE> |
