PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electric vehicle controller in which the space of a resistor can be saved, th cost can be reduced and an electric brake can be utilized effectively when the stringing voltage is high by reducing a current flowing from the stringing to a resistor when the stringing voltage is high without installing an input current detecting means. SOLUTION: The electric vehicle controller comprises a variable voltage variable frequency inverter 8 for supplying an AC motor 9 driving an electric vehicle with an AC current produced by inverting a DC current collected from a DC stringing, and a resistor 5 and a switching means 6 connected in series between positive and negative terminals on the DC side of the variable voltage variable frequency inverter. The electric vehicle controller is further provided with means (20, 30) for limiting the duty factor of the switching means 6 such that energy larger than electric brake energy, estimated to be generated from the AC motor 9 during brake operation at least based on an output current signal from the variable voltage variable frequency inverter 8 and a stringing voltage signal of the DC stringing 1, does not flow into the resistor 5.
