Process for the hydrogenation of macro- and microcrystalline paraffins in a two-layered catalyst bed at temperatures of 280 to 345 DEG C, with hydrogen pressures of 7.4 to 14.7 x 10<6> Pa, a ratio of hydrogen to the initial feedstock of 150 to 400 l under normal conditions/1, an hourly weight space velocity HWSV of 0.20 to 0.80 h<-1>; characterised in that the initial feedstock based on microcrystalline paraffin is placed in contact with a catalyst bed consisting of two layers of catalysts, the first catalyst layer comprising a hydrodemetallisation catalyst whereas the second catalyst layer comprises a hydrotreatment catalyst, the proportion by volume of the hydrodemetallisation catalyst being from 25 % to 75 %.
