The invention relates to toluene-free nail varnishes. They consist essentially of nitrocellulose, a resin for enhancing the appearance, a plasticiser, and organophilic clay of the type represented by montmorillonite modified by an amine, and a non-aromatic diluent/solvent system. This varnish contains between 0.1% and 10% by weight of camphor, and may be obtained according to the traditional method by mixing a colourless thixotropic nitrocellulose gel with a non-thixotropic colourless base, the gel and the base being free from aromatic diluents and/or solvents. Depending on the requirements, pigments and/or colorants are also added, as well as the standard additives.
