In the aldolisation of active hydrogen cpds. (I), the new feature is that reaction is carried out in the presence of a double-layer hydroxide (A) contg. water of crystallisation, under azeotropic conditions. - (I) are aldehydes of formula RCHO (Ia) (R = 6-22C hydrocarbyl with 0-3 double bonds) and (A) is of formula: (M21-xM3x(OH)2)Ax.mH2O, where Mn = at least one n-valent metal, A = equiv. of anion of mono- or poly-basic acid; x = 0.17-0.5; m = 0-1).
